Many experts believe that when fathers and mothers involved in high-conflict divorce cases are unable to co-parent then the Court should not award joint decision-making and parenting time (formerly called “Joint Custody”). However, according to Psychology Today Magazine, new research indicates that not only is shared parenting not harmful in high conflict situations, but that shared parenting can lessen the harmful effects of parental conflict on the children. The study shows that when children have a warm relationship with both parents it is a protective factor, even where the parents cannot get along with each other and are unwilling to co-parent.
Of course, the best way that two parents can assure the well-being of their mutual children is to try their best to work together, even if it is on a very basic level.
